The classes were all very busy this week speaking Irish, learning seanfhocail, designing Irish posters, making crafts for St. Patrick's Day, singing Irish songs and learning Irish dances. On Thursday Airneán, a traditional Irish band performed for all the classes. The band members played the guitar, banjo, button accordian, flute and uileann pipes. The children learned all about these instruments as well as getting the chance to listen so some fantastic Irish music. Some classes performed some Irish dances with Airneán too. On Friday teachers awarded children in their class with prizes for being "Cainteoir na Seachtaine." All the school also came together in the hall for a céilí mór. Every class performed Irish songs and Irish Dancing for the rest of the school. There was an excellent variety of different songs and dances. Some girls who play traditional music and attend Irish dancing classes outside of school, then performed for everyone. The céilí finished with the whole school standing to sing Amhrán na bhFiann. It was a very enjoyable morning with so much talent being showcased by the children and teachers. It was a very successful week. Special thanks to Mrs. McDonald who coordinated all the activities for Seachtain na Gaeilge.
Ms. Concannon's 4th class girls had a wonderful day out at the RDS on the 6th of March where they presented their science projects as part of Science Blast 2019. Their investigation title was 'does the surface area of a parachute effect its performance'. The girls learned lots about gravity and air resistance from completing their project. They were awarded with a plaque for their great work. It was a super experience and the girls had an absolute BLAST !!
Springtime Reading in the Sun - Room 12 and 13 enjoyed their visit to the school library immensely today. The sun was shining and it was warm enough to read outside. We saw and heard lots of signs that spring is here. We heard birds in the trees, we felt the heat of the sun on our backs and we saw lots of flowers beginning to bloom. We are looking forward to our next trip already.
On Thursday 7th of March, the girls in St. Brigid's dressed up as characters from their favourite books. There were some amazing costumes worn and many of the children even made their own costumes. Some classes also brought in their favourite books to share with others. Some of the older classes joined the younger classes for some paired reading. Other classes engaged in art activities and English lessons where they explored books further. It was a fun-filled day for all the classes.
On Friday Caitríona Byrne. a mum from St. Brigid's who works as a dental nurse came to visit Junior Infants, Senior Infants and 1st Class. Caitríona talked about the importance of brushing our teeth twice a day and showed the girls how to do this using a large model of teeth. The girls learned all about how sugar attacks our teeth and they played a game identifying which foods and drinks were good or bad for their teeth. Caitríona gave the classes posters about dental hygiene and games to play to help to reinforce their learning. Each of the girls were given a new toothbrush so they could practise what they had learned straight away. Many thanks to Caitríona for this very enjoyable learning experience!
